Moms -to-be have so many choices to make, from doctors to hospitals to nursery decoration. Every women thinks about their upcoming birth. Some are excited, some are anxious, some are extremely afraid. We are all excited to meet our new child—this person that has grown inside of us! Many women find that they are pushed through the process of pregnancy and childbirth without making many of their own choices. You have the power to make your own choices…to plan your birth as you wish, to manage your pain as you wish, to choose the care provider that is best for you, to choose your childbirth educator, and to have the support of a doula if you want.

The word “doula” originates from a Greek word which means “mother the mother”. Traditionally doulas were by the side of mothers during the birth process and in the postpartum period, providing loving support and assistance during the first precious weeks of new motherhood.

Studies have shown that having a doula by your side during childbirth can:

  • shorten labor and result in fewer complications;
  • reduce negative feelings about the childbirth experience;
  • reduce the need for drugs and procedures like Pitocin for labor induction;
  • reduce the mother’s desire for pain medication and/or epidural during labor.
